ONE SMALL STEP AT A TIME

Settle in. Get set up.

Android asks a few extra questions for apps installed outside the Play Store. These steps explain what you’re allowing and why.

  1. 01

    Download on your Android phone

Open this page in Chrome or your usual phone browser and tap Download Android beta. If you are viewing it inside WhatsApp or another app, use its menu to open it in your browser. No portal sign-in is needed to download.

When your browser asks to confirm an APK download, check the file name matches focusanchor-0.15.0-beta.apk. Find the finished file in your browser’s Downloads or the phone’s Files app.

  2. 02

Allow this browser to install the app

Open the APK. If Android says this source is not allowed to install apps, tap Settings on that message and enable Allow from this source for the browser or Files app you used. Return to the APK and tap Install.

You can also find this under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps. This permission lets that chosen app install APKs. After installation, return here and turn the permission off again. Menu names vary by phone.

The installer currently calls the app Focus Harbor; this is the FocusAnchor beta. It requires Android 8.0 or newer.

  3. 03

Let Android complete its safety check

Google Play Protect may offer to scan an unfamiliar app. Let the scan finish. Keep Play Protect enabled.

If Android reports harmful behaviour or blocks installation with a security warning, stop and report the exact message through portal Beta feedback. Do not turn off protection to force installation. A work-managed phone or other security setting may prevent third-party installs entirely.

  4. 04

    Enable app and website blocking

Open Focus Harbor and choose Enable blocking from Overview. In Android’s Accessibility settings, find Focus Harbor under downloaded or installed apps, then enable its service.

Accessibility lets the app identify the foreground app and supported browser address bar, and display the focus screen. Grant this only if you trust this beta and want its blocking features.

If Android says Restricted setting or App was denied access, open Settings → Apps → Focus Harbor → ⋮ → Allow restricted settings, if offered, and confirm on the phone. Then return to Accessibility to enable the service. This is a separate permission from allowing APK installation. If the option is missing, check your phone maker’s guidance rather than forcing a bypass.

  5. 05

Enable internet blocking when you need it

For an “All internet” blocklist, open the app’s Settings → Enable internet blocking, read the explanation and approve Android’s VPN request.

This local VPN discards blocked network traffic on your phone; it does not send it to a VPN server. Android allows one active VPN, so it can replace another VPN during a session. App exceptions and essential controls remain available. Regular app blocking uses Accessibility.

  6. 06

Connect the phone and try a short session

Sign in to the portal, select Add device and create a pairing QR. On the phone, open Settings → Scan to connect and scan it, or use Connect to portal to enter the portal address and pairing code. The QR on this download page only opens this guide; it does not pair a device.

Turn on app sharing in the phone app if you want to choose its installed apps from the portal. Calendar access and sharing are optional. If Google sign-in is unavailable for your beta account, use email or contact the person who invited you.

Start with an unlocked two-minute session. Open a blocked app, check the focus screen and timer, and confirm access returns when the session ends. Then try your schedules. Local sessions also work without pairing.

IF SOMETHING GETS IN THE WAY

A little help.

“App not installed” or “Package appears invalid”

Delete the incomplete APK download and download it again. Check that the file finished downloading, your phone has free space, and it runs Android 8.0 or newer. If an older copy came from a different signing key, Android can reject the update. Report the exact message before uninstalling: removing the app can erase local settings and pairing. Do not remove a working installation just to retry.

“App was denied access” when enabling Accessibility

Follow step 4 above. “Install unknown apps” and “Allow restricted settings” are different controls. Android versions and manufacturers can impose additional restrictions; that setting is not available on every phone.

The app opens, but nothing is blocked

Check that Accessibility is enabled and a session is actually running. All-internet lists also need VPN permission. Selected apps are blocked in a regular list; in all-internet mode, selected apps and websites are allowed exceptions. Start with an unlocked short test.

How do I install a newer version?

Return to this page, compare the version with your installed app, and download the new APK. Open it and choose Update when offered. Updates using the same signing key and app ID normally preserve app data. Android handles each installation; the website cannot install or update silently.

Can I install it on an iPhone or a managed work phone?

This APK is Android only. Work profiles, administrator policies or enhanced Android protections can prevent installation or Accessibility access. Use a supported personal Android device for this beta.
